Practitioner analysis
Bastian is one of the best systems integrators in North America for brownfield DC automation — they have genuine experience managing active-DC retrofits where shutting down operations is not an option. Toyota's acquisition has added financial stability and global reach without meaningfully changing the project delivery model. Their Exacta WCS is mature and integrates well with major WMS platforms.
Bastian's best project teams are in high demand — the team you meet during the sales process may not be the team running your project. Ask specifically about project manager and controls lead assignment and get commitments in the contract. Their strength is brownfield complexity; for greenfield projects without complications, you may get better value from a smaller SI with more focused attention.
Mid-to-large ($3M–$30M) brownfield automation projects at retailers, e-commerce, and 3PLs where the DC must stay operational during construction.
Project cost overruns are an industry-wide SI problem — Bastian is not immune. Build a 15% contingency into your project budget and get clear change order terms in the contract.
Questions to ask in your RFP / demo
- Who specifically will be assigned as project manager and controls lead — can we meet them before contract?
- What percentage of your projects come in on time and on budget? What are the most common causes of overruns?
- Show us a reference brownfield project at a DC that stayed operational throughout construction.
