Mobile Industrial Robots (MiR)
Collaborative AMRs for internal logistics and material transport
MiR (part of Teradyne) builds collaborative AMRs that automate internal transport in manufacturing and warehouse environments. Their top-module ecosystem enables one robot to perform multiple tasks across shifts.
Manufacturing and healthcare environments needing certified-safe flexible material transport
Cost-sensitive warehouse operations or applications needing dedicated forklift AGV capability
Strengths
- Widest payload range in AMR class (100–1,350kg)
- Top module ecosystem enables one robot multiple jobs
- ISO 3691-4 certified — highest AMR safety standard
- Strong in pharma and hospital environments
Weaknesses
- Higher cost than Chinese AMR alternatives
- Fleet management software less mature than some competitors
- Limited pallet fork capability vs dedicated forklift AGVs
- Teradyne ownership creating some product roadmap uncertainty
Practitioner analysis
MiR has the largest installed base of autonomous mobile robots for internal logistics in manufacturing environments. The SLAM navigation is genuinely robust — MiR robots handle dynamic manufacturing environments with changing equipment and traffic better than most competitors. Fleet management through MiR Fleet is straightforward for operations with up to 50 robots.
MiR's strength is the robot hardware and navigation — the top modules (shelves, hooks, forks) are where you'll find variance in quality. Evaluate third-party top modules for pallet applications — some are better than MiR's own options. Also: MiR's WMS/MES integration requires middleware in most cases; factor in integration development time.
Manufacturing and DC internal logistics where payloads are under 1,500kg and routes are relatively defined. Particularly strong for line feeding and kit delivery in manufacturing.
Not the right choice for heavy manufacturing where payloads exceed 1,500kg — evaluate OTTO 1500 or Vecna instead.
Questions to ask in your RFP / demo
- What top module do you recommend for our specific use case, and is it yours or a third-party?
- Walk us through the MES integration — what does the middleware layer look like?
- What is your support model and spare parts availability in our region?
